With floral arrangements, pfizer
the beautiful flowers take center stage. I want to shine the spotlight on an often-overlooked part that truly adds a unique dynamic to the floral presentation — foliage.
The creative use of foliage gives floral arrangements incredible star power. Foliage is tremendously versatile with their shapes, physician
surface structures and colors. Because there are so many ways to manipulate foliage — folding, binding, weaving, layering, collaring, and sewing — they offer a variety of design possibilities. Here are examples.
A compact bouquet becomes grander when crisscrossing arches of long, thin strands of flax, bear grass or lily grass surround the flowers overhead.
Packed and layered leaves randomly clustered among flowers and berries add texture.
Even the smallest bouquet turns heads when foliage is used dramatically; such as encircling a bouquet with aspidistra leaves.
Ask your florist to show you how foliage can enhance a floral arrangement.
What are some creative uses of foliage you’ve seen in floral designs?

Crown Jewels
Spring has arrived at the Pennsylvania Convention Center with the 2013 Philadelphia Flower Show, denture
the largest indoor flower show in the nation. It is in full bloom in the beautiful, site quirky, and majestic spirit of Great Britain. From knights and kings to modern-day London, the exhibits are inspired by centuries of British culture and reflect the event’s theme — “Brilliant!â€
While touring the exhibits, I was transported from royal palaces to dark and foggy moors, then to a mad hatter tea party and a cricket club. My favorite exhibits are “JACK†by Schaffer Designs and “Crown Jewels” by the American Institute of Floral Designers. In “JACKâ€, you’ll experience the distorted, dark streets where Jack the Ripper roamed. There may be a line, but it is well worth the wait and it won best in show. “Crown Jewels†is an interpretation of the Royal Regalia in the splendor of rich jewel tones. It is spectacular.
Throughout the show, there are demonstrations and competitions. While I was there, SUNY Cobleskill students were competing on stage and the audience chose the winner by voting on their iPhones.
The Philadelphia Flower Show runs March 2-10. For information, visit www.facebook.com/theflowershow or theflowershow.com.
